Gabe hustled down the stairs of the parking garage. He hadn’t expected there to be so much traffic between his sister’s place and Plano. He’d been back in the Dallas area for over six months, but he still hadn’t gotten used to the increased traffic. Normally, he gave himself extra time to get anywhere, but getting out of his sister’s house had been a trial.

Stacy had peppered him with questions when he’d arrived home. She’d wanted to know all about the woman he’d spent the night with twice. And whether they were dating. He understood Stacy’s questions and the concern he saw hovering in her eyes—to a point. She didn’t want to see him hurt.

But there’d been no way to explain where he was going this afternoon without also saying he was going to be a father. And that conversation would have resulted in his phone blowing up with calls and texts. Secrets were not a thing in the Davis family.

He wasn’t quite ready to subject Tessa to that. The Davis clan would love her and gladly initiate her into their crazy brood. But the Davis family was so many things.

Loud, intrusive and loving beyond measure. Overwhelming didn’t begin to describe his family.

Tessa would fit in perfectly.

She was a strong, independent woman. But that didn’t mean that she didn’t need someone to care about her. He wanted to make things easier, particularly now that she was pregnant.

But that urge had been there before he’d found out about their impending bundle. Tessa made him happy. It was as simple—and as complicated—as that.

But what if she didn’t want his help?

The worry tickled the back of his brain. That was the thing Gabe did best. He thrived on making sure those he cared about knew they could always ask him for anything. But Tessa had seemed unsettled by it this morning.

He tried to remind himself that she hadn’t had someone to look after her. Maybe she just wasn’t used to it. But the worry still bounced around his brain as he shuffled around a car in the parking garage.

Tessa could handle anything—Gabe would never doubt that—but it didn’t mean she needed to shoulder all the burdens that were coming.

He was an expert at lightening the load. He’d just have to figure out a way to show her that she could rely on him for anything. Always.

“You still have a few minutes,” Tessa’s voice carried across the parking garage.

He spun and felt the small bead of warmth that had nothing to do with the afternoon heat spread through him as she started toward him.

She stepped next to him and hesitated only a minute before sliding her hand into his. “You ready for this?”

“I think so.” Gabe matched her stride as they entered the building with at least a dozen different doctor’s offices. The blast of air-conditioning sent a shiver through him, and he was glad that Tessa led the way. “I’m a little nervous.”

“Me, too. This isn’t the exact path I saw myself on to becoming a mom.
